  • Apple's First Foldable iPhone Duo Goes on Sale October 23
Cartoon illustration of a foldable smartphone opening like a book with two screens.

Apple's first foldable iPhone is almost here. The iPhone Duo, announced on September 9, reaches store shelves on Friday, October 23, with preorders opening this Friday, October 16, at 5 a.m. Pacific. Starting at $1,999 for the base 256GB model, it is the most expensive mainstream iPhone configuration Apple has ever sold — and the company's boldest bet since the original iPhone Pro Max redefined the top of the lineup.

The hardware is pure book-style foldable. Unfolded, you get a 7.6-inch Super Retina XDR inner display; closed, a 5.4-inch outer screen handles calls, messages, and quick glances. Both panels support ProMotion, and the inner screen ships with a matte nano-texture finish designed to cut glare and make the display crease nearly invisible — the one detail every foldable gets judged on. Apple hardware VP Tom Marieb has gone so far as to invite scrutiny on the crease, a sign of confidence that matters.

Inside, the Duo runs Apple's new A20 Pro chip paired with an in-house C2 modem, and it carries an IP68 rating — rare for foldables, which have historically traded water resistance for the hinge. Cameras are a pair of 48-megapixel sensors (main and ultra wide), with no telephoto lens, though Apple leans into rear selfies viewed on the cover screen instead. Two colors are available: Star White and Night Sky.

The launch is staggered in a way Apple rarely does. The first wave lands October 23 in the United States and more than 70 other countries and regions, including Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Japan, Singapore, and the U.K. A second wave of 28 countries follows on October 30. Pricing climbs steeply with storage: $2,199 for 512GB, $2,599 for 1TB, and $3,199 for the top 2TB configuration.

The timing puts the Duo under real pricing pressure. Fresh Nikkei Asia reporting says Apple has cut iPhone 18 Pro component orders by up to 20 percent as the year's roughly $100 price hikes cool demand — buyers may be voting with their wallets. Whether a $1,999 foldable can find a mainstream audience when even $1,199 Pro buyers are hesitating is the question that will define the Duo's first quarter.

Still, this is Apple's first new form factor in years, launching under new CEO John Ternus after Tim Cook's move to executive chairman. The foldable market has waited a decade for Apple to validate the category. This Friday's preorder window is when we find out whether buyers were waiting for the Duo — or were fine with the foldables that already existed.
