October is shaping up to be the busiest month in Apple's hardware calendar in years. Hot on the heels of the "Welcome Home" smart-home event on October 13, Bloomberg reports that a second Apple showcase is set for "on or around" Tuesday, October 27 — and this one is all about the Mac. The headliner: Apple's first-ever touchscreen MacBook Pro, wrapped in a redesigned chassis with an OLED display.
According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, Apple has been working on an OLED MacBook for several years, and the project is finally crossing the finish line. The new 14-inch and 16-inch models will keep the MacBook Pro name (earlier speculation about a "MacBook Ultra" label appears to have missed the mark), but little else stays the same. The familiar notch gives way to an iPhone-style Dynamic Island, the LCD panel is replaced by OLED, and — in a genuine first for the Mac — the display responds to touch.
The redesign also trims weight and bulk: the new machines are reportedly "significantly lighter" than today's MacBook Pros, though not dramatically thinner. Curiously, the silicon story has a twist. Instead of the expected M6 Pro and M6 Max, reports point to the existing M5 Pro and M5 Max chips, with Apple apparently reserving its next performance leap for the M7 generation. A standard M6, meanwhile, will power a refreshed entry-level 14-inch MacBook Pro and a new iMac — both keeping their current designs. (Apple already debuted the M6 in the latest Mac mini.)
The iPad mini gets its own glow-up. Rumored for an OLED display for months — Gurman flagged an October OLED iPad mini back in July — the pint-sized tablet will reportedly gain a landscape-positioned FaceTime camera, a revamped speaker system, and, per leaked code findings, an A20 Pro chip. It would be the first meaningful update to the mini since 2024.
Like the October 13 event, the October 27 launch is expected to pair an online video presentation with hands-on time for journalists, echoing the Los Angeles Mac showcase Apple staged in 2024. Bloomberg says the audience is creative professionals working in video, photo, and music production — a fitting crowd for a touchscreen OLED workhorse. If you're weighing a holiday laptop or tablet buy, this is the date to circle.
