The headphone jack is dead. Long live the headphone wire. Bose has launched the Bose Noise Cancelling Wired Earbuds — $99, USB-C, with active noise cancellation — and they are the company's first wired earbuds in 11 years. Shipping starts October 15, and preorders are open now.

Yes, wired. In 2026. And it is not nostalgia for nostalgia's sake: wired listening is having a genuine moment. WIRED reports that wired headphone sales rose 10% in the second half of 2025 and another 20% in the first part of 2026, driven largely by younger listeners and a wave of celebrity sightings. Bose's own president of consumer audio, Raza Haider, says he spotted the trend firsthand visiting college campuses, where wired earbuds had suddenly become ubiquitous.

The product itself is a clever bit of engineering. The new earbuds use USB-C for a plug-and-play digital connection and pack Bose's proprietary QuietControl active noise cancellation — no batteries, no charging case anxiety, no companion app required. You plug them in and they work, with noise cancellation that draws its power from the host device. For travelers, commuters, and anyone who has ever fished a dead earbud out of a case before a flight, the appeal is obvious.

At $99, Bose is pricing these as an impulse buy rather than a flagship. That is a deliberate move: the wired revival is being driven by people who want decent sound and noise cancellation without committing to another $250 gadget that needs nightly charging. It also neatly sidesteps the biggest annoyance of true wireless — battery degradation — because there is no battery to degrade.

There is a fashion angle too. The visible wire has become a deliberate style choice, a small rebellion against the seamless wireless aesthetic. Bose is betting that what is old is new again, and the sales data suggests the bet is well timed.

Eleven years after its last wired release, Bose is reading the room better than most. Whether the trend has legs or burns out as a fad, $99 for Bose noise cancellation with zero charging hassle is an easy recommendation. The wire is back — at least for now.
