  • OnePlus 16 Lands in China: 185Hz Display, 9,000mAh Battery, Elite Extreme Chip

The OnePlus 16 launches in China tomorrow, October 12, and on paper it is the most aggressive flagship spec sheet of the month. OnePlus has confirmed Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 — built on a 2nm process, with a Matrix Cores GPU reserved for the top "Extreme" tier of the chip — as the phone's engine, paired with dedicated custom chips for display, touch response, and connectivity aimed squarely at gaming performance.

The display is the headline. A BOE X4 panel runs at a 165Hz system-wide refresh rate and pushes to 185Hz in supported games, with native 185fps support confirmed for titles like Arena Breakout, Naruto Mobile, and Peace Elite. OnePlus calls the combination a three-chip esports system, with its Fengchi Gaming Kernel designed to hold high frame rates through long sessions — and a magnetic Ice Card Mini cooler accessory for players who take thermals seriously.

Then there is the battery: a confirmed 9,000mAh silicon-carbon cell, the largest ever in a OnePlus phone, with 100W wired charging and 50W wireless charging plus bypass charging for gaming. For context, the OnePlus 15 already carried a 7,300mAh pack that was considered huge; the 16 adds more than 20 percent on top without, according to the company, turning the phone into a brick.

Cameras get the biggest generational jump. The main shooter is a 200MP sensor at 1/1.4 inches, flanked by a 50MP ultrawide, a 50MP periscope telephoto with 3x optical zoom, and a 50MP front camera with autofocus. OnePlus has also teased an XPAN-style wide-format camera mode and a Master Mode for stills, plus a rear LED and IP66, IP68, IP69, and IP69K ratings — the phone can shrug off high-pressure hot water jets, for whatever that is worth.

The catch is availability. OnePlus has confirmed no U.S. or European launch, following the brand's pullback from Western markets — Indian timing is also unconfirmed, though pricing is expected to be announced at the October 12 livestream. International buyers who want one will likely be importing through resellers, with no local warranty and possible band issues to sort out. RAM and storage configs run from 12GB/256GB up to 16GB/1TB, and the phone ships with ColorOS 17 on Android 17, in colors including Tomorrow's Starlight, Dark Forest, and Mars Masterpiece.

For the global market, the OnePlus 16 is a tantalizing "if only" — the fastest phone chip on paper married to the biggest battery in the brand's history, just out of reach for most Western buyers.
