Nintendo's holiday headliner for the Switch 2 arrives next week. Nintendo Switch Sports Resort launches exclusively for the Switch 2 on October 22, returning the series to Wuhu Island with 12 motion-controlled sports — and, in a welcome surprise, it is priced below the usual $69.99 flagship tier at $49.99 on the eShop and $59.99 physical.
The 12-sport lineup blends familiar favorites with island-exploration events. Returning and remixed sports include bowling (with the chaotic 100-pin mode), archery, boxing, volleyball, table tennis, tennis, golf, basketball, and thumb wrestling, joined by three island-traversal sports — prop plane, skateboarding, and power cruising — that let players explore an open-world Wuhu Island solo or with friends, collecting items and completing tasks along the way. Hands-on previews from PAX Aus and Comic Con have praised the Joy-Con 2 motion and mouse controls, with one previewer calling archery and 100-pin bowling standouts.
That open island is the game's biggest structural change. Skateboarding uses Joy-Con 2 mouse controls, power cruising lets you hold the Joy-Con like a jet-ski handlebar, and the prop plane lets you tilt to fly freely around Wuhu — picking up collectibles, shooting balloons, and snapping Spocco Photos at sightseeing spots. It is a bigger, freer take on the formula than Nintendo Switch Sports offered, and it leans directly into the island nostalgia of Wii Sports Resort.
For players who want structure, Island Crown Mode returns as the single-player progression ladder: take on top-ranked Island Champions and climb toward a shot at the Island Legend. Competitive players can earn Spocco Points through matches and spend them on character outfits, hairstyles, accessories, and sports equipment, with customizable Sportsmates and Miis carrying over the social identity system from the previous game.
A Nintendo Switch 2 console bundle ships alongside the game at $499.99, bundling the system with a digital copy — a clear play for family gift season. And Nintendo's broader holiday slate confirms the company sees October as its big swing: Sports Resort joins a crowded month that includes Resident Evil remakes, Castlevania: Belmont's Curse, Final Fantasy Resonance, and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 on the platform.
The release also marks something of a changing of the guard. Sports Resort is Nintendo's first big first-party motion-sports package for the Switch 2, following Nintendo Switch Sports on the original hardware. With a seven-minute overview trailer out now and the launch just days away, Wuhu Island is about to get very crowded again.
